Sterile filtration is the removal of yeast and bacteria from the beer prior to bottling, canning or keg racking. If these micro-organisms are not removed, they will reproduce generating off flavours, off aromas or hazes in the beer. If carried out correctly, sterile filtration will ensure beer quality and provide a longer shelf life.

It is critical that all equipment that comes into contact with the product post the sterile filter is also sterile. Note that rubber hoses cannot be adequately sterilised so hygienic stainless steel process pipework and fittings should be used in this area.

Sterile filters are relatively cheap to purchase but have significant on-going costs associated with the filter cartridges.
